* You must have a
Quadraphonic Decoder in your Amplifier - the kind made in the 1970’s - to hear all 4 audio channels in the quad mixes.
Without a quad amp, you can still hear the front 2 channels with a regular stereo amplifier.
(the rear channels are encoded into the high-frequency spectrum supposedly beyond the threshold of human hearing)
I strongly and highly recommend
an old Marantz Stereo- or Quad-Amp for the best sound when listening to any Pink Floyd recordings.
(old Pioneer Amps for Zeppelin)
You can get them on eBay for a “reasonable” price, but first learn about them from this website:
Marantz’s Legendary Audio Classics - The Collector’s Pages
Modern surround-sound (5.1 or 6.1 or 7.1) amplifiers will not decode quadraphonic mixes
All selections have been carefully chosen from the sources above to be the cleanest/clearest sound with the greatest fidelity, and have been edited [clipped when needed – not remastered and no (additional) noise reduction] for the most enjoyable listening experience possible. Completeness was primary consideration; in some cases, two copies of the same song may be included if the more complete one is much shabbier than the other. Clearness (lack of distortion) was chosen over fidelity (frequency spectrum and record level); wider/stronger fidelity was chosen over noise (tape hiss, LP crackles, etc.)
When transferring from LP to CDR at home, I went to great lengths to record at the highest recording level without clipping or distortion. Many old recordings have recording levels that go up and down throughout the song(s). In many cases, I have spent hours recording one song; I start by listening and watching the record level (with the recorder set to “record/pause”) intently and noting on paper the volume changes, then I play again and again adjusting the record level to keep the level at its initial median level while noting again on paper the level values. Then I finally record (no pause) while making the necessary adjustments manually. The end result is a song who’s musical volume stays the same, but the background hiss and crackle goes up and down. Again, my choice is for fidelity over noise, barring distortion.
What is not included are “edit” releases, i.e. “single edits,“ “radio edits,” “promo edits,” etc. This is where a complete section of time of a familiar song was hacked out, but nothing new was added.
Contrast an “edit” to a different “mix” where an instrument is added or missing, or stereo effects are different, or something like that; or a different “version” where complete elements of the song, or the whole song are different.
Note that not all sources listed above are actually used in the compilation below, but are listed for comparison purposes, in that the unused sources would then be acknowledged as inferior to the used ones.
